Normally, you'd go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wifi, then click on your wifi name and simply hit the switch that flips between Public/Private.

Now go to "Network and Sharing Center" in Control Panel Network and Internet, you can see Network has become "Private network". Way 2: Windows Registry Editor. If you are an advanced user in your Windows 10 computer, this method will be easier for you to switch the network type between public and private. Step 1: Press Win + R to open Run box and type in "regedit". Press Enter and click "Yes" to run Registry Editor. Step 2: Go to following key in Registry Editor.

The wifi just doesn't show up in the available networks GUI or on running the "netsh wlan show networks" command, but it shows up fine and connects to all other devices. It connects when I use a lan cable. It is not a range issue as the laptop can detect and connect to much weaker networks. For some reason won't detect this particular network.

A private network is one which either does not connect to the internet, or is connected indirectly using NAT (Network Address Translation) so its addresses do not appear on the public network. However, a private network allows you to connect to other computers that are on the same physical network. This allows a set of computers to share files and printers, while limiting internet connectivity. This wikiHow teaches you how to set up a private network.

Your home wireless network should show up under Private networks, but if it doesn’t, then you will probably have to manually tell it that the network is a Home network and not a Public network. Allow Program through Firewall The main reason most people will ever mess with the firewall is to allow a program to work through the firewall.
