Plug your network drive into your router or modem via the network plug on the back, or plug the USB into your router. Follow the on-screen installation software that comes with the drive. If directed, type in the IP address for the network drive into your web browser. Finally, set up what you want to back up or save to the network drive.

Click on the button on the menu bar near the upper right portion of the window that says "Map Network Drive" in Vista or "Tools," then "Map Network Drive" in XP. This opens a small window where you will provide details of the drive to be mapped. Step 3 Select a drive letter from the pull-down menu.

Select the folder that you want to use as the drive. Click on the name of the computer you want to use, then navigate to the folder that you want to select as the drive and click on it once to select it. If you aren't connected to at least one other computer on your network, you won't be able to select a folder.

check the allow trusted network locations. rather than putting the mapped network drive letter (which is what i was doing) put in the full UNC to the drive/folder being mapped.. eg i have t:\ on the clients computers mapped to \\server2\alldocs. so in the trust location you put in \\server2\alldocs rather than t:\.
